We'll be working at Maybury State Park in Northville Sept. 11 and 18.
Take a look at this site to learn more about the park and its interesting history.
After our first visit, post your thoughts about the park and what we accomplished. Due by Monday, Sept. 18.
Maybury State Park has a very interesting history, I would have never thought that the land once held a tuberculosis sanitarium. The park was very peaceful when we visited last Monday, and I’m sure that the park would be breathtaking in the fall when the leaves change colors. The work that we were assigned wasn’t hard, the only issue we occasionally had was the equipment not cooperating. The park was a bit cleaner by the end of our time there and the trails were easier to walk through. Other than not always having enough equipment, the service project wasn’t too bad and I’m positive that the park assistants appreciated our help.
I had not known about the existence of Maybury park until we went there as a class and I am grateful that I had the chance to become acquainted with the land and its rich history. I was so enamored by its majesty that I will most certainly come back even after the mandatory service learning project, for the park offers many of my favorite recreational activities such as fishing and bike trails as well as a considerably more scenic environment/paysage. I was happy to contribute to the maintenance of the landscape so future visitors may have the opportunity to enjoy the park to the fullest extent.
Maybury has such an interesting background and offers a multitude of different services and activities for everyone to enjoy. I realized that the park is a lot bigger than I had originally believed it to be. It contains over 1000 acres of land and when we traveled there as a class, we must have only seen a small portion of that. Though we did not complete much work while there, I felt we did contribute in the upkeep of the property and we had some time to fully appreciate the trails we cleaned and enjoy the peaceful nature of the park.
The history of Maybury is actually really interesting. I never knew that it was a place for those with tuberculosis to go to because there was not a cure for it at the time. It is hard to imagine that the almost 1000 acres of land had about 40 buildings on it at one point. Maybury State Park is a great park with many amazing hiking and bike trails. Being at the park and helping clean up the park was a great experience. We helped clean up some trash in the parking lots, and cut down hanging branches to clear trails for runners and hikers. I was very happy in contributing help towards cleaning up the park and was able to take in the amazing scenery of the park.
Maybury State Park was certainly impressive and well taken care of by its staff. It seems like a great park to go to whether you are just walking the trails or camping over the weekend. Being able to lend a hand to the staff there was a great opportunity and even though trimming plants and picking up trash isn't a difficult job, it is a time consuming job. I'm glad that I got the chance to make things a bit easier on the park staff and to give back to my community. I can't wait for the chance to go back and perform further volunteer work and again help improve the state of the park.
Although I was not able to attend the former visit to Maybury park, I took it upon myself to do some reading on it before the next visit so that I would have some idea of what to expect. After doing minor research, what I found most appealing was the parks history. It gives you an informative summary on how the park came about and all the unique attributes the park had before it became the outdoor park. What stood out to me the most is how it is so close and convenient for the people in our community and how not only before was the park cool then from having a "Tuberculosis Sanitarium" and growing their own food, but to now having all those fun activities.
My experience with Maybury state park was truly amazing and interesting. Due to the well kept nature of the park by the staff, it was a very relaxing day were i could just kind of take a deep breath of the fresh air and really examine all the wild life that the park has to offer. Even though we didn't do much work on our trip, it was really fascinating just getting to still do a little work and help keep the park in tip top shape for the people that use the trails for either biking or running. This also was a great experience for me because when i graduate from college, I would like to work in the DNR and be apart of that organization, and help preserve nature like Maybury state park does.
After our first experience at Maybury state park, I am truly amazed by the beauty of the park. It was very interesting to find out that at one point the land on which the park now lies, was once a Tuberculosis sanitarium. The park was very well kept, even before we arrived, we just helped clean up the park to keep it in excellent condition. It was a pleasure giving back to the community and helping the people at Maybury. This is definitely a park I can see myself coming back to due to the well kept trails and all around beautiful scenery.
My first experience at Maybury State Park was profound. A quick glance around, I could see how well the grounds of the park were kept up. My service task for the day was to help clean up the trails, but only minor cleaning was required. I have to give the staff credit for taking such great care of the park and possibly the people who come there. It was interesting to learn the park’s history and see where it was originated from. The park was founded in 1919 originally named Detroit Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, a camp for people who had tuberculosis because there was no cure for Tuberculosis. I enjoyed my first visit to the park and can’t wait to return to continue my service.
After going to this park and working on the trails, I learned that this park had a very interesting past. The park originally opened as a sanatorium to remove people with tuberculosis from society so as to stop it from spreading. It was really interesting getting to see the old sites they used during that time. While we were there we helped clear paths of branches and picked up trash. This opportunity seemed really helpful to the park and therefore the community.
After going to maybury park I like nature a lot more. I had a great time at time trimming the trails cant wait to go back. Learned more at the park then in high school.
